Both, the old and the new light on Ilha do Ferol

Atol das Rocas, in former times also known as Douglas Island, is located between Fernando de Noronha, in the east and the Brasilians maincoast on a position of 03N52 and 33W49. It is a part of the Brasilian Oceanic District and adminstered by the Navy. Atol das Rocas is about 1.6 by 2.4 km in area and there are two islands located in the western part. Ilha do Ferol is the largest, located in the northwest, and Ilha do Cementario, some smaller, close south.
Atol das Rocas is formed by the rest of an ancident volcano and rises abruptly from the sea-surface. It is located on a submarine platform, between 20 and 50 m deep. This platform stands on an underwater vulcano about 3600 m high.
,Ilha do Ferol is about 900 m long and between 80 and 110 m wide. The highest point is in the north and rises to 6 m. Both islands are well vegetated by bushes, gras and some stooden trees. On the northern point of Ilha do Feroa stands a ruined lighthouse, errected in 1933. A new light, 14 m high, stands close by.
The history of the island is in the dark. It seams that Manuel Luiz discovered the reef in 1501.
