Fastnet Rock, the south-western point of Ireland

The Fastnet Rock is the south-western most point of Ireland, and located about 4 miles offshore Cape Clare Island. The Rock consists of a group of steep-sided rocks and Fastnet Rock, the outern most danger, rises to 28 meters. Fastnet Rock is the best known rock in a chain of rocks like Carrigmore Rock or Badger Rock, all located in the south-western corner of Ireland. The Fastnet Rock lighthouse was errected in 1854 on the top, but rebuilt in 1897 on a small sockle. The today seen lighthouse rises to 49 meters. A concrete house is located near the top of the rock, with a helicopter base. Fastnet Rock is known for the Fastnet Rock sailing regata. During WW II German submarines partolled in the vicinity of the rock and wrecked several British and American cargo-ships.
