The Island of Luing [EU-008]

The island
of Luing, part of the Inner Hebrides, is located east of Scarba and west
of the mainland on a position of 56N10 and 05W40 [WAB: NM70/71]. The island
is round 6 km from north to south and about 1 km wide. It is mountainous,
and the ConocDhomhnuill rises to an elevation of about 91 meters. The only
populated settlement is Cullipool, located in the northwest and inhabited
by about 300 people. There is a smaller village, named Toberonochy, on
the southeast coast, connected to Cullipool by the only street. The island
is connected by ferry to the mainland.
There are two ruinen Forts on the island, the northern was built by the
MacLeahan Family, livin here from the mid of the 11th century till 1765,
when the fort was burned down. The southern fort was errected by the McBarthow
Family in 1315 and is in private use till today.
Most of the island is cultivated and used as a sheep-land. There is no
tree, only spare bushes and fine grass.
