The both Minerva Reefs, Tongas most outlier Reefs
by Wolfgang Schippke, DC3MF

SeamapThe both Minerva Reefs, about 20 miles distant, are located about 270 miles south west of the Tongatapu Group. The reefs are located on a common submarine platformfrom 549 to 1097 metersbelow the surface of the see. The South Minerva Reef is parted into The East Reef and the West Reef, both circular with a diameter of about 3 miles. Hearald Bight (23S56, 179W08) is a small entrance into the Lagoon of the East Reef. Around both reefs are two small sandy cays, vegetated by low scrub and some trees. North Minerva Reef (23S38, 178W55) is circular in shape too and has a diameter of about 3.5 miles. There is a small island circumrunning the reef, except a small entrance into the flat lagoon. Several iron towers and platforms are reported to stand near Heralds Bight, errected by the American Navy during WW II. A disused lighttower stands on North Reef, also errected by the Americans.
