The island group of Neuwerk, Scharhörn and Niegehörn
The island of Niegehörn, is located about
5 kilometers north-west of Neuwerk
and aconnected to the northern Scharhörn Island by a group of drying
sand bars. The mean position of the island is 53N57 and 08E26. Niegehörn
is an island which growed up since the last 100 years, and now the part
which is allways over mean high tide is about 100 by 150 m in area. The
highest point on the new land is 3 meters above water and is the wall of
a small warft, built up in 1967.
Niegehörn is a very poor part of land, mostly fluted during bad weather.
It was first reported as a dangerous drying part in the end of the 19th
century. So within the last years wide areas of bolders were built to stable
the new land. The only natural vegetation is qualler, a kind of salt-water
resistent grass, which was cultivated by man.
Inside the warft is a wooden house lokated on 5 meters high bolders, which
is inhabited from April till late of October each year by a bird keeper.
The island is in private use of the German Jordsand, a nature reserve foundation.
The island together with the 900 meter distant Scharfhörn Island is
a part of the German nature reserve Wattenmeer, and any stay and landing
needs a special permit by the Hansestadt Hamburg, the country of Hamburg,
the National Park Wattenmeer and last but not least by the Nature group
Jordsand.
About 2 km towards south a new land growed up, about 100 m long and 20
meters wide. This new island did not have a name till now, but within the
next years a new island will appear.
There is a heavy dispute about the sense about activation, reade
here .
