<== The Hatia Island Group in the eastern Part of River Ganges Delta
Hatia Island is the second largest island in the eastern part of the
Mouth of River Ganges, and located close west of Sandwip Island. Hatia
Island consists of about 25 singel islands, but the most largests are North
Hatia (22N40, 90E55) and South Hatia Island (22N20, 91E10). The island
group is about 40 Miles from north to south and up to 15 miles wide. The
largest in the Hatia Group is South Hatia, where two settlements are located
Hatias in the north of South Island (22N28, 91E06) and Sagaria (22N10,
91E12).
The island group of Hatia is located on the western end of Chittagong State,
and seperated from the centre of Ganges River by Shabazpur River, a wide
waterway seperating Shabarpur Island from Hatias.
The islands are composited mostly of swampy ground and mangroves, but also
well cultivated and used. Most of the islands are surrounded by drying
sandbars, making navigation dangerous.
During the monsune most of the islands are underwater, and also the both
settlements are endangered by the waters. The islands change here surface
during every highwater-periode.
The first reports of this islands were given by Alvarez de Domingue, one
of Albuquerques team, in 1508, when he sailed along the coast. He found
the South Island inhabited, but did not annex it for Spain. Later on the
islands becam a part of Great Britains India.
