425DXNews - The Story

425 DX News was born in May 1991, but it originates from a group of local amateurs (the so-called "425 DX Gang") who used to meet on 145.425 MHz and exchange DX information. Some fifteen years ago we realized that 2 metres did not suit any more: many people living far from call area 1 wanted to participate in the exchange so that we moved on HF (10 metres at first, then 80 metres) and organized a weekly info net for Italian Dxers. In the early Nineties, as Packet Radio got a footing and the Packet Cluster Network links became more and more reliable, we started producing a bulletin in writing and we called it 425 DX News in memory of the frequency from where everything had begun. Between May 1991 and March 1995 the bulletin was sent in Italian language on the BBS and PCL networks, but when we started to distribute it on the Internet it became clear that we needed to have it translated into English. Two mailing lists were created and, thanks to Mirko (IK0ZSN) and Maurizio (I1-21171), the 425 DX News Web Pages and Reflector were established. Nowadays the mailing lists are run by Gianluca Mazzini, IK4LZH. We have more than 6,000 subscriptors who receive the English bulletin and more than 1000 Italian amateurs who get it in their own language. Moreover 425 DX News is still sent on the PCL and BBS for those who have not access to the Internet. I have been the editor of 425 DX News since its birth, but I have been lucky enough to rely for years on the valuable co-operation of several individuals. I am particularly indebted to Piero Forno, IK1IYU who helped a lot in making the bulletin a success. Massimo Balsamo, IK1GPG, was the responsible for the QSL Routes column. My current assistant is Valeria, IK1ADH (who happens to be my wife). Information is gathered from a number of different sources: personal communications, the Internet, our fellow DX bulletins and of course direct on the air. Special thanks go to the translators: Maurizio, I1-21171, who edited the English version when the bulletin still used to be written in Italian; Paolo Garavaglia, IK1NLZ, who currently provides the translation into Italian; the staff of QTC Magazine, who have recently taken up the translation into Spanish. We are really grateful to the latter, whose careful work makes 425 DX News enjoyable by a greater number of amateurs in Spain, Central and South America.

425 DX News nasce nel maggio del 1991, ma trae origine da un gruppo di radioamatori locali (la cosiddetta 425 DX Gang) che erano soliti trovarsi a 145.425 MHz per scambiarsi informazioni DX. Circa quindici anni fa capimmo che i 2 metri non erano piu' idonei: molti OM che vivevano lontani dalla zona 1 volevano partecipare alla vita del gruppo e così ci spostammo in HF (prima in 10 e quindi in 80 metri) e organizzammo un net informativo settimanale per i DXer italiani. All'inizio degli anni '90, man mano che il Packet prendeva piede e i collegamenti tra i vari nodi di Packet Cluster diventavano più affidabili, pensammo di produrre un bollettino scritto che venne chiamato 425 DX News per ricordare la frequenza da dove tutto era partito. Tra il maggio 1991 ed il marzo 1995 il bollettino venne inviato in italiano sui BBS e sul Packet Cluster, ma quando incominciammo a distribuirlo su Internet fu subito chiaro che bisognava tradurlo in lingua inglese. Vennero create due mailing list e, grazie a Mirko (IK0ZSN) e Maurizio (I1-21171), vennero create le 425 DX News Web Pages e il Reflector. Attualmente le mailing list sono gestite da Gianluca Mazzini, IK4LZH. Abbiamo oltre 6000 sottoscrittori che ricevono il bollettino nella versione inglese e più di 1000 OM che ricevono quella in lingua italiana. Inoltre il 425 DX News è tuttora inviato sul PCL sui BBS pe quanti non hanno accesso a Internet. Sono il curatore di 425 DX News dalla sua nascita, ma ho la fortuna di avere la preziosa collaborazione di molti amici. Sono particolarmente grato a Piero Forno, IK1IYU che mi ha aiutato a far diventare grande il bollettino. Attualmente sono aiutato da mia moglie Valeria, IK1ADH. Massimo Balsamo, IK1GPG, è stato per un certo periodo il redattore della rubrica "QSL Manager". Le info provengono dalle fonti più disparate: comunicazioni personali, Internet, gli altri bollettini DX con cui abbiamo rapporti di collaborazione, e, naturalmente, direttamente "on the air". Un ringraziamento particolare ai traduttori: Maurizio Bertolino, I1-21171, che curava l'edizione inglese quando il bollettino veniva prodotto in lingua italiana; Paolo Garavaglia, IK1NLZ, che attualmente provvede alla traduzione in italiano, lo staff di QTC Magazine, che ha recentemente iniziato a tradurre il bollettino in spagnolo. Siamo realmente grati a questi ultimi , il cui accurato lavoro porta il 425 DX News ad un grande numero di radioamatori in Spagna, Centro e Sud America.
